From time to time we track down a member IABC Lincoln and ask a few questions so you can get to know him or her better. Here we talk with Linda Van Hoosen, who is the 2016–2017 Co-Vice President of Communication & Administration on the IABC leadership team.
IABC: Who is your current employer?
I work at Olsson Associates, an engineering and design firm based in Lincoln.
IABC: What is your job title and what do you do?
I am part of Olsson’s corporate communications team. Most of my focus is Olsson’s external communication. That means writing press releases, keeping track and posting things on our social media sites, and putting together a monthly client e-newsletter. I am also the resident videographer. I have helped produce most of the video found on Olsson’s website and internal instructional videos for employees.
IABC: Why did you join IABC?
I was encouraged to join by coworkers. Also, when I started working at Olsson, I was new to the corporate communications world. I thought IABC would be (and is) a great opportunity for me to learn more about my field and meet others doing the same thing!
IABC: What area of communication are you most passionate about and why?
My passion is video, but I love to write, too! Olsson has provided me the opportunity to explore these passions. Why do I love video? It’s become a very popular medium to communicate—it’s a quick way to tell a story visually to members of an audience who don’t have time to sit and read something. You can also convey powerful messages and emotion through video, and it’s entertaining. Writing has always been a passion. I love to read. To me, books are a much greater way to escape then anything else.
IABC: In what areas of communication do you have experience?
I worked in broadcast news for 25 years before working in corporate communication. TV news is a form of communication. In my capacity as news assignment editor in a TV newsroom, I supervised reporters, conducted meetings twice a day, talked to city, state and federal officials, everyday people, and managed the station’s website and social media pages. It taught me how to communicate on many different levels. My experience helped set me up for my position at Olsson.
IABC: What do you like to do for fun?
Reading—I try to read at least 5 or 6 books a year. Might not seem like a lot, but it is to me. I also make and sell jewelry with my sister. We’ve been doing it for 12 years. We don’t make a fortune from it, but it’s a way to spend time with each other. I enjoy going to the movies with my son, Myles. Even at his age (he’s a teenager), he’s still my movie buddy. I also LOVE the holidays. I like to decorate (it’s crazy) for Christmas.
IABC: Tell us about your family.
I have two amazing sons. The oldest, Wesley, lives in Chicago. He’s a Nebraska Wesleyan grad—a theater major. He’s also a singer/songwriter and has produced an album. Myles attends Lincoln Southeast High School. He’s aspiring to be a chemical engineer. We have two loveable beagles, Sydney and Wilson.
IABC: How long have you lived in the Lincoln area?
I moved to Lincoln as a kid in 1974 and I’ve lived here since. It’s a great city to raise a family!
